Sculptural Lighting

Over the summer, I spent time in the studio with friends developing a series of still life and on-body images, using bags as the central subject. Each piece brought its own balance of texture, structure and detail, our process was intentionally exploratory—testing how different lighting techniques interacted with materials like leather, woven fabric, metallic finishes and matte surfaces.

The aim was to draw out and elevate the inherent character of each design. For more sculptural forms, we leaned into shadow and contour to define silhouette and presence; for woven textures and natural grain, the light was refined to enhance tactility without losing depth or integrity. All of the clothing sourced was architectural and minimal, with the intention of complimenting or contrasting the bags texture and colours.

Working in an iterative way, we made small, deliberate adjustments to uncover the most effective combination for each piece. Through this process, we were able to create imagery that highlights material quality, dimensionality and design intent—shifting the bags from purely functional objects into considered, visually distinctive sculptural forms.
